Cabana Club Members Speak Out About Increased Dues
Dozens of Sawgrass Marriott Cabana Club members are planning to boycott ordering food and drinks at the club to show their anger over an 80-percent increase in membership dues. Related: ChristinaAbel's blog | login or register to post comments | printer friendly version | Tags: pvb news

I am not a member of the Cabana Club but I certainly can sympathize with those members that are infuriated by the enormous increase in annual dues. Many of these people have stated that they do not intend to renew their membership either for financial reasons or sheer aggravation at the unreasonable increase in dues. I believe these members have a good case. I believe that not only should they not renew but, in addition, they should get together and sue the new Cabana Club owners to recover their initiation fee. When they joined the Cabana Club they were asked to pay a large initiation fee ( some stated 6000.00 or more) for the right to belong. Along with that they were afforded a reasonable expectation of the current dues and, after years of membership, they have come to accept and expect a reasonable increase in dues and services. Now suddenly, their espectation of the affordability of their Cabana Club membership has completely changed. Had they known the huge amount of increase that was to come, many may not have joined and the club would not have the benefit of the huge initiation fees. in my opinion, the members that feel they are being forced from the club for fininacial reasons should ban together and also force the new owners to refund their initiation fees so that they may go and join a club that may treat them more fairly. As a 10 year member of the Cabana Club I also was very disappointed in the dues increase. The first renewal notice did not even mention the 80% increase from last year. I believe the Marriott is trying to pay for a bad decision when they built the Spa and then priced it out of range for many Ponte Vedra residence. Contrary to popular belief everyone who lives in Ponte Vedra is not rich. Some of us happen to buy or build a home before the tremendous increase in prices. I would hope that all of the current members would give up their membership to the Cabana Club and see how fast the waiting list fills the spots. I don't think it would happen so fast in this economy. I have made my last trip to the Cabana Club and hope they find someone who will pay as promptly as I always have done. I am also a Marriott rewards member but will drop my membership in favor of another hotel chain that treats people right.
GOOD LUCK CABANA CLUB MANAGEMENT
