Come on drivers... the left lane is for passing!
Can you slower drivers please move into the right lane on A1A, JTB, etc. to let faster traffic pass??? Maybe the state or county should invest in signs to be placed along our roadways to remind slower traffic to move to the right! Hands-free devices only. It's so disheartening to get stuck behind someone in left lane who, when you can finally pass them, are totally oblivious to everything around them. Submitted by Sharpless on Fri, 10/05/2007 - 9:30am.
I'll agree with you in general. However, the speed limit still applies in the left lane, and many left-lane drivers who complain about other motorists slowing them down are actually speeding. If I am driving consistently at the posted speed limit in the left lane, the slower-traffic-keep-right law does not obligate me to move over so that another driver can break the law. I've had particularly bad experiences with this near the east end of JTB, when I want to head north on A1A and thus *must* be in the left-hand lane, and the speed limit there drops to 35 m.p.h. well before you actually exit JTB. Boy, the flashing headlights and honking horns I've received from others because I dared to obey the law and slow down to 35 there, as the signs direct! The problem here - and the illegality - is not that I am driving too slowly, but that others are driving too fast. Submitted by NeptuneNovice on Sat, 10/06/2007 - 9:45am.
I don't think anyone would argue with that. It's those that are in the left lane that don't have to be and those that refuse to even go the speed limit. Beach Blvd. and Third St. are particularly bad. I can't tell you how many times I've been behind someone crawling down Beach or Third under the speed limit and usually talking on a cell phone. I think I'm normally pretty patient and for the most part, just roll with it but after a particularly bad day at the office or when nature calls, my patience is tested when I get stuck behind one of these drivers :-) please let me pass. I agree 100 %!!! If someone wants to go 1000 miles and I am doing 950 mph.....I get over and let them by. What I can't stand are the people who just hang out in the left lane and won't let anyone pass. You are not the road monitor!! Just let the faster traffic pass safely on the left and go about your leisurely way!! There used to be signs that asked "slow traffic keep right". But I don't see those signs anymore and I don't think they teach it anymore in driver's education!! The newest traffic menace is the driver that sticks to the middle lane on the highway and forces the big trucks to pass on the right. Big trucks can't use the extreme left lane on three lane highways and I don't think the middle lane guy knows that!! Submitted by dtms23 on Sat, 12/22/2007 - 9:05am.
On most state and interstate roadways, there are signs that read, "Slower Traffic Keep Right". These signs are posted because it is a law not to impede the flow of traffic. If you are travelling in the center or left lanes and not passing, you are impeding the flow of traffic. If more people would be considerate of others and not so "into themselves", driving in this town would improve greatly. It might also cut down on road rage, caused by slower traffic blocking the roadway, and unnecessary accidents, generally caused by inconsiderate drivers not worrying about their effect on others. If everyone would open their eyes and attempt to be conscious of their own actions, life would be great!!! Merry Christmas everyone. Submitted by dtms23 on Sat, 12/22/2007 - 9:08am.
You are incorrect in your assumption that you can drive in the left lane at the speed limit. It is for passing. It is not your concern if people are speeding, that is the job of certified law enforcement officers. If you are driving the speed limit in the left lane, you are impeding the flow of traffic. Please be considerate of others that would like to pass you. If they get a speeding ticket, it is not your concern, it is theirs. Submitted by IslandChild on Sat, 12/29/2007 - 8:44pm.
Driving North on Mayport Rd. / A1A awhile back, probably a couple of years, I got behind what I thought was just another rude, lane hog, doing 35 mph in the left lane during afternoon, getting off work traffic. Since I was going towards Mayport and had to veer left anyway, I just followed hoping this gentleman with the State Legislature 18 license plate in front of me was going to the base. No such luck. As I was coming along side of him in the left turn lane to A1A, he just drifted in to the same lane in front of me without even the courtesy of a signal. Apparently our lawmakers don't think it is a problem, nor is road courtesy required or desired.

One day drivers will realize that it's NOT all about them - it's not the 'ME" it's the "WE" that will ever progress us as a species. Roads are designed to take you from point A to B at a specific rate of speed. You law breakers passing on the left and right only break the A-B principle and are the root cause of all traffic jams. Speeding 10 miles (or usually more on JTB) only gets you to where you are going faster by only a few minutes. SLOW DOWN - The life you save just may be your own. See you again at the next red light! |

I couldn't agree with you more! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. I know we're a sort of layed back, relaxed kind of community but enough already - please, please, please move to the right and hanging up your phone might be a good idea too.
