Crime and Safety in Atlantic Beach
Recently I returned to my Atlantic Beach home after a challenging day at work. Part of my welcoming committee was missing when I unlocked my front door and stepped inside. I missed one of my dogs straight away, and discovered as I searched for her, that someone had broken into the rear of my home. Apparently someone needed my stuff more than I did, but in removing the stolen goods from my home, my back door was broken, the screen door left open, as well as my gate, which allowed one of my dogs to wander through. I am very lucky that someone saw her wandering around and picked her up. A series of fortunate events brought my little dog back home to me, but my heart clutches at the very real possibility I could have lost all of my pets that day. As I was out searching for my dog while my home was being secured, I passed by a church whose sign stated: GOD IS WORKING ALL AROUND YOU. I remarked aloud that I hoped He was also working all around for one small, innocent dog; a member of my family. Not five minutes later, I was led to meet someone who had met someone else earlier, which all worked together for the safe recovery of my pet. That is the positive of this story. The very big negative is the fact that my home was broken into. I moved to this area from Jacksonville, to escape the continually climbing crime rate. All I wanted was a safe place to call home. A place where I don't have to wonder as I work my day job whether my pet family is safe. I don't ask for much out of life. I just want a calm, peaceful and quiet life. Why is it getting so hard to find??? miscmood

Thank you for the comment and your concern. No, unfortunately, no one was caught and my tv is unrecovered. I really did not expect anything, if I'm honest. Even as I was reporting it to the police, I knew there was very little they would be able to do. I'd told them if they were going to spend time looking for anything, then to please look for what truly mattered to me - my lost pet. I am so very grateful to the young woman who saw my dog wandering around the road, and took the time to catch her to keep her safe. Over the years I have endured three burglaries. I am hoping the third time was the proverbial charm and that I will not have any further experiences. Oddly enough, they were in three different homes! None of those burglaries ever resulted in any one being caught, and I never got any of my personal belongings back. It'd be interesting to see how many burglaries are ever truly solved. Not just in Atlantic Beach, but anywhere. I am thinking that perhaps police are so overstretched that they concentrate on the more serious crimes, as they figure most people are covered by homeowner's or renter's insurance, and will get their stuff replaced eventually. But, as I say, losing my pet, if only for a few hours, was stressful enough that I lost my voice for over two days! To some they may be just animals, or perhaps at best, pets. But mine are my family. Thanks again for the kind words. deep peace, miscmood |

I read your blog. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. I know what it is like to feel violated myself with someone breaking into something that belongs to you. Did the police every catch the individual (s) who did this? Glad to hear you found your dog. There was some positive out of this.
