New(s) Media - The Hindenburg

Today is the 71st anniversary of the Hindenburg disaster and I'm going to admit - while it was a horrific event, the videos from that day have always fascinated me. The size of the blimp and the way it peels apart as it bursts into flames is a spectacular sight.

Here's a video report from the day:

I won't detail the story, since everybody has at least a vague idea of what happened that day (but here's the Wikipedia page, just in case.)

New(s) Media - Mad Magazine Fold-Ins

Here's the first edition of what I'm going to cleverly call New(s) Media. It should be a daily update of something I have found interesting while trolling around the internet.

If you have your own collection of the cool, smart, funny or funny-looking stuff on the internet, feel free to add it here. With 262 Quadrillion* internet pages out there I can always use another pair of eyes.

First up - A New York Times multimedia piece on Fold-Ins, which is the lost art of folding a page over itself to reveal the true image. Al Jaffee of Mad Magazine was great at it, and NYT.com has an incredible multimedia piece displaying his work.

The top 100 Beaches runners

Not the top 100 ever, just the top 100 from this weekend's Gate River Run (hint: if you're looking for a particular name, and don't feel like scrolling through the entire list, trying hitting CTRL + F on your keyboard to bring up a search box)

Also to note: A runner's Chip Time did not determine the overall rank, the Gun Time did. So if one runner with a slower time seems to have a higher rank, it's because their Gun Time was better than another runner's Chip Time. Confusing? Yes.

Overall Rank Name , Age and Hometown Chip Time

47 "Mike Hensley, 22, Ponte Vedra, FL" 51:02:00

48 "Chris Mullaney, 21, Atlantic Bch, FL" 51:19:00

69 "Greg Carr, 36, Jax Bch, FL" 52:42:00

78 "Theodore Devos, 29, Ponte Vedra Bch, FL" 53:38:00

150 "Walter Campbell, 46, Atlantic Bch, FL" 58:26:00

153 "Shawn Burke, 42, Atlantic Bch, FL" 58:30:00

157 "Paul Wilson, 39, Ponte Vedra Bch, FL" 58:44:00

Sex offender database

We now have a searchable sex offender database here on Shorelines.com. You can search by zip code, county, city and even whether the person is a sexual offender or sexual predator.

The results will show you the offender's picture, current address and other information. The results will also be plotted on a map.

All information in our database is from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but if you have any questions about how to use the database, feel free to comment on this blog and ask me.

You will find it by hovering your mouse over the "News" tab in the black menu bar up top, or you can click here:

Christmas tree - real or artificial?

My family always had a real Christmas tree - no exceptions.

Sure, real trees can be a bit of a pain, but they always make for good memories. For starters, my family is from Pennsylvania. My mother and father moved to Greenville, South Carolina, right before I was born. In our part of PA, the tradition is to put your tree up the week leading up to Christmas Eve. In our part of SC, it seems like the tree has to be up Thanksgiving afternoon.

That being said, we were always the transplanted (no pun intended) Yankees standing at the Christmas tree farm 3 days before Christmas Eve. Of course, all the great/good/decent/still living trees has been chosen already, and we often settled for a very "Charlie Brown" sort of thing.

Philly cheese steak

I'm originally from Philadelphia and thusly the appreciation for a great cheese steak is part of my genetic make-up. However, nobody "down here" seems to get it.

There is never enough meat, and the rolls are either too small, too thick or too not greasy. You see, in my opinion, three things make an authentic cheese steak:

1) Meat

2) Cheese

3) Grease

Combine copious amounts of all three, and you have yourself one of life's greatest pleasures.

In last week's TU (I think it was the Friday paper), they claimed that a place at the beach had authentic cheese steaks. Any merit to that? Any fellow "City-of-Brotherly-Loveians" willing to testify?

Flooding at the Beaches

Does anyone have flooding stories from last night/this morning? Where are the worst areas at the Beaches?

The beach erosion at Huguenot Park is supposed to have been fairly significant, has anyone been out there to see? Can anybody remember worse flooding (besides from a hurricane, of course)?
